Ancient LiteracyBy William V. Harris

How many people could read and write in the ancient world of the Greeks and Romans?

No one has previously tried to give a systematic answer to this question. Most historians who have considered the problem at all have given optimistic assessments, since they have been impressed by large bodies of ancient written material such as the graffiti at Pompeii. They have also been influenced by a tendency to idealize the Greek and Roman world and its educational system.

In Ancient Literacy W. V. Harris provides the first thorough exploration of the levels, types, and functions of literacy in the classical world, from the invention of the Greek alphabet about 800 B.C. down to the fifth century A.D. Investigations of other societies show that literacy ceases to be the accomplishment of a small elite only in specific circumstances. Harris argues that the social and technological conditions of the ancient world were such as to make mass literacy unthinkable. Noting that a society on the verge of mass literacy always possesses an elaborate school system, Harris stresses the limitations of Greek and Roman schooling, pointing out the meagerness of funding for elementary education.

Neither the Greeks nor the Romans came anywhere near to completing the transition to a modern kind of written culture. They relied more heavily on oral communication than has generally been imagined. Harris examines the partial transition to written culture, taking into consideration the economic sphere and everyday life, as well as law, politics, administration, and religion. He has much to say also about the circulation of literary texts throughout classical antiquity.

The limited spread of literacy in the classical world had diverse effects. It gave some stimulus to critical thought and assisted the accumulation of knowledge, and the minority that did learn to read and write was to some extent able to assert itself politically. The written word was also an instrument of power, and its use was indispensable for the construction and maintenance of empires. Most intriguing is the role of writing in the new religious culture of the late Roman Empire, in which it was more and more revered but less and less practiced.

Harris explores these and related themes in this highly original work of social and cultural history. Ancient Literacy is important reading for anyone interested in the classical world, the problem of literacy, or the history of the written word.

If you're looking for an overview of prenatal yoga or are a newbie, this probably won't be what you want. But if you want to learn more about the topic, keep reading! When I found out I was expecting, one of my concerns was how my yoga practice should be specifically modified. Advice from my teachers and online articles helped, but I wanted was a comprehensive, trustworthy resource to understand WHY I should or shouldn't do a pose. That is this book. There are highly detailed instructions for each pose, what trimester they're appropriate for, and sequences for beginner and advanced yogis in each trimester. There are also thorough chapters on diet, meditation, pranayama and more. As the other reviewers have said, the Iyengar approach does include a lot more props beyond the usual bolster-blanket-block combo. The book does offer alternative ways to do these poses, like using the back of a chair instead of some fancy gymnastics balance beam looking contraption. Or just skip those. This is a wealth of knowledge and I'm betting a lot of prenatal yoga teachers have this in their library. As a side note, I like that the photos are of "real life pregnant women", not like the prenatal chapters in other books I have with lithe celebrity yogi's who are not pregnant and wearing very little - I'm sure I'll like the former the bigger I get ;-)

Very informative and well-organized with several recommended sequences from which to choose during different trimesters. I like that Ms. Iyengar's book allows for certain supine poses well into the second or third trimester, as long as you feel capable. In my previous pregnancy I felt like yoga instructors were teaching classes as though we were all near the end of the third trimester and barely able to move! This book offers a great way to keep up your practice all the way up to your baby's birth day with variations appropriate to your comfort and stage of pregnancy. I'm not wasting my time or money on boring prenatal yoga classes this time around!

My Iyengar yoga teacher told me about this book and I am so glad he did. It was exactly what I wished I had found earlier in my pregnancy. It is NOT specific to Iyengar yoga, either. If you practice yoga and want to continue to do so during conception, pregnancy, labor, and after, then this book will tell you which poses are okay for which trimester and which ones are not. Also how to modify common poses. There are recommended sequences for practice at home. The only drawback is that some of the poses rely on using a lot of equipment that you absolutely would not have at home--trestle, some crazy back-bending table, ropes hanging from ceilings. But this is not true of all the poses. I bought two blocks, a strap, a wedge, yoga ball, and a bolster and feel like I can do a lot of the poses on my own. I also think these props will be helpful during early labor at home. With this book, I am able, at 7 mos. pregnant, to continue in a Level 1/2 class with confidence!

Helpful for doing it right when you’re pregnant even though you’re a professional Iyengar yogi 👍🏻Full of important details for every asanas wich helps you not abusing your flexibility due to hormones and harm your body instead of helping it to get along nicely with pregnancy 🤰🏼

Very useful book for pregnant women, the asanas are very well explained and there are also flows or asanas that one can do when having an issue e.g. Nausea, etc. It also says which positions to avoid. However there were 1-2 asanas that were confusing to me - in some chapters they appeared as not to be done in the first trimester and in another chapter they seemed ok for the same first trimester.

This is truly an amazing book. I highly recommend it to any Iyengar teacher, student, or mother. I just took an Iyengar yoga teacher training for the stages in a woman's life and everything I learned was in this book!

I found this book useful but I have done yoga for a number of years. For a beginner the Shiva Ray DVD is probably better. Having said that my labour was 2 hours and I practiced through the start to end of my pregnancy and through the start of the contractions.I really admire the Iyengar method.

nice book, i use it everyday!

From the Inside Flap
Civic life is not only about the authority of government and the duties of citizens, but should also encompass passion and imagination. Civic Builders presents recent municipal buildings around the world that subscribe to this attitude: they all demonstrate a quality of playfulness and liveliness, whilst maintaining their dignity and power.

The book focuses on the city hall, where people have the most direct experience of government, both on the purely symbolic level and in the nitty-gritty of governmental functions. Organised chronologically, it begins with Säynätsalo Town Hall in Finland and three North American city halls: Toronto, Boston and Dallas. The Post-Modernist Portland Building, the James R. Thompson Center and Mississauga City Hall take us into the 1980s, followed by a profusion of intriguing civic buildings that began to emerge in Europe, North America and Asia in the 1990s - including Ottawa City Hall, the Vidhan Bhavan, La Flèche Town Hall, Murcia Town Hall and the Clark County Government Center, which is shown on the cover. It concludes with several projects in the United States that are still on the drawing board.

Beyond city halls, the book includes legislative buildings such as the Reichstag (1999) and the European Parliament Building (1999); some buildings that are only symbolically public, such as the Berlin Chancellery (2001) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (1999); and designs that show civic imagination can flourish even in the service of administration.

It is possible to see in these buildings a warmth and welcome, and a sense of connection to community. They bring to mind the base meaning of 'metropolis', whose roots are literally 'mother-city'. In short, they show the human touch.

Patience: The Art of Peaceful LivingBy Allan Lokos

"As founder and guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York, Allan Lokos has an arsenal of tools for coping with stressful situations." - Rachel Lee Harris, New York Times

To survive the roller-coaster ride of life, with its ever-changing shifts from pleasure to pain, gain to loss, and praise to blame, requires a substantial depth of patience. In this life-changing book, Allan Lokos sheds new light on this much-sought-after state of mind, and provides a road map for cultivating greater patience in one's life.

According to Lokos, to develop a depth of patience we must first acknowledge the unhappiness caused by our impatience and anger in its many manifestations-from mild annoyance to rage. In this revelatory book, Lokos draws on his many years as a Buddhist practitioner and spiritual teacher, as well as interviews with a wide range of individuals who have had their patience tested-often dramatically so-and lays out a compelling path to the heart of patience."

Review
“Patience is a thoughtful and always interesting book, and one that engages our attention. It challenges many of the assumptions and misconceptions we have about ourselves and the world. It offers us the means to find release from self-inflicted (and other-inflicted) pain. As The Beatles sang many years ago, "we all want to change the world." Patience would be a terrific place to start.”
–The Huffington Post

"Along with suggesting exercises and meditation practices for cultivating mindfulness and patience, Lokos offers testimonials from individuals who have enhanced their lives by learning patience. His laugh-out-loud chapter on raising children is a treasure. A great deal of the world's problems could be solved by taking Lokos's advice." — Susan DeGrane, Booklist

"This book, both practical and profound, is a wonderful demonstration of just how to bring patience and a new way of being right into our daily lives. It is filled with insight, warmth, and compassion." — Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Lovingkindness

"Allan Lokos has a depth of experience that is woven throughout this fine book. He reaches with both mind and heart into the nature of patience. As Lewis and Clark mapped our way into the timeless beauty of the Northwest, Lokos is a very wise and human guide who breaks trail into the country of patience, marking all the sacred sites along the way and honoring all the sacred guides who have come before." — Mark Nepo, author of The Book of Awakening

"Down-to-earth, full of ways to become more patient in challenging situations at home and at work, this book helps you develop one of the most important of all virtues for fast-paced, stressful, and often frustrating life today." — Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Buddha's Brain

"In this gem of a book Allan Lokos invites us to attend to and practice what is perhaps the most overlooked of all spiritual qualities. Patience is an important read for everyone." — Andrew Olendzki, Ph.D., Senior Scholar, Barre Center for Buddhist Studies

"Allan Lokos has written an essential and profound book that can change your life. Spiritual growth is not like fast food. It takes time for its roots to grow and that requires us to be receptive and patient. Patience delves into its vital subject with wisdom and compassion and offers us a path to our own higher self. Understanding the challenges of our hurried and harried world, Lokos has written a remarkable and practical guide to becoming a truly patient and spiritually effective person." — Rabbi Zalman SchachterShalomi, author of Jewish with Feeling

"Drawing on Buddhist teachings and his own deep wisdom, Allan Lokos reminds us of the peace and freedom that is possible when we cultivate genuine patience. The stories and exercises give practical guidance in coming home to an openhearted presence in the midst of difficulty. This book is a compelling and beautiful invitation to pause and arrive fully in our life." — Tara Brach, Ph.D. Author of Radical Acceptance
