I got an A in the class I needed this for, but it was a struggle. Yes, there are some advanced concepts, but this was not a good textbook for learning. It was very hard to follow, and oftentimes it was almost impossible to find what formula one needed for a given situation, because the book spent so much time on how the formulae were derived, but not enough on practical uses. Sometimes it was even difficult to determine what the variables were because the book had done such a poor job of explaining, and you couldn't even use the search function to find what you were looking for.

All the basics are here in this book I used this as a companion to go with my class assigned book and ended up using it in my job as well. One of the software packages we were looking at uses examples directly out of the Fetter in their software so having this book helped me test the software which was an added bonus.

Be aware that this is an international versions. The page numbers and appendix organization do not match the original. But for the cost, it is very useable. All the content seems to be there.

Thanks a lot for putting this brand new book I payed for in the wrong size box and damging it. Played a lot for it only to have it looking all bent up like the pictures show. I need this for class so I cannot afford to waste time with the return and ordering a new one process. Very unhappy.

This is a great book but not entirely expressible for the novice reader. I will keep this book in my library.

Straight forward strategies that really work. Simple to understand and easy to spot on a chart.

I bot this book after seeing it referenced favorably in a number of other books I have read. Have also heard about Linda Raschke's reputation. This is a technical book on short term trading strategies, at least, in the part that I have read so far. I am about 1/3 through it, and I am working each strategy out on paper to make certain I understand it. I have applied one strategy and had immediate success in 3 trades which paid for the book multiple times over. The book is not cheap. I bought it used for $123. I can read about one or two strategies at a time and then I have to put it down. This is not a book that one will sit down and read with fascination from cover to cover. This is an instruction manual. I hope some of the other strategies will be as good as the one I tried. I recommend the book.

I read the book and basically confirmed some of the patterns that I've been trading for years. Everyone has it's own name for the setups, but regardless of the name, the patterns describe in the book, do work!Everyone has their own twist to these patterns. I notice one reviewer had mentioned that he profited on the exact opposite strategy that the book had described. Selling new lows and buying new highs. Personally I think this is more dangerous than the strategy in the book(Buying new lows and Selling new highs). That is what swing trading is about. I do the same exact strategy as they mention in the book, and make money from it frequently. But I am also aware of the fact, that new lows/highs are set for strong fundamental reasons, so instead of using regular stops, I use Stop and Reversal(SAR)type orders. These order give me the best of both worlds. If my estimate is correct, I get an early fill as the market decelerates in one direction and accelerates in the opposite. If the trend continues, my SAR order gets me out, and fills me in the direction of the momentum. Price, Momentum, Time and Volatiliy and how you react to them, is the key to swing trading.It's not set in stone that these patterns work everytime, but as the title mentions, it's the probabilities of the markets reaction when these patterns form. Like any other method in trading, nothing works everytime, but as years go by, you find out what works best for your trading style and what doesn't. This book didn't teach me anything that I already have found out through experience, but for traders interested in swing trading, it's a fantastic starter book and worth the investment if purchased. It excerises the mind's of traders on how to anticipate the market, thereby always thinking one step ahead of it. And when your anticipation is wrong, get out!One other important factor. Rashke was a former successful floor trader and Connors was a hedge fund manager. These people know how to trade professionally. They know how other floor traders trade on the floor, and how institutional giants such as ADM,Refco and Rosenthal Collins play their cards and make money. In other words, their livelyhood depended on their attention to detail in the area of trading. They aren't like most us that trade, that have a job to fall back on. This is their job and main source of income! My point is, don't just learn their techniques,setups and strategies, but more importantly, learn their mindset, and what they do when the market moves in favor or against them. Determine how they react to such conditions and take notes! Through time and experience, you'll soon notice that you will be able to react with percision and timing as these professionals do, without doubt but with full confidence!

Great book, gets right into tactics with no fluff

There are good trading strategies in here. Some of them are for intermediate time frames but some are for intraday also.All of them come with examples. One or two I won't use because they require too many computations off-line, and I don'twant to spend that much time on my trades. But for the most part, I would give this 4 stars out of 5.

I bought this book on a recommendation from another trader. I paid a lot less than the $175 they are asking now, but I still thought it was very expensive. I read through half of the book and thought it was interesting. On one of those days I had the book open on my desk and realized that one of the patterns from the book was forming! I waited till the right moment and took the trade on 2 year treasuries. Exited the trade about a minute later with a $225 profit. That paid for the book on a single trade.I realize I could have also lost $225 on that trade, then the cost of the book would have been around $350. I was now happy with the purchase of the book. I looked for more trades, but did not find any that week. Then the book got pushed aside and forgotten about. I found the book again last week because I heard someone mentioning it. I pulled it out and reread it.I think the book has something to offer. Is it too expensive? That is hard to say. For me it became free after one trade. Was I just lucky? I don't think so because I can scroll through charts and see a lot of the set-ups in hindsight. So the trades are there, its just a matter of being there to pull the trigger as they happen.I hope to get more out of the book from this second reading. One thing I have noticed is that many times I read a book and get something. Then upon rereading it I pick up many thoughts that I did not see or understand during the first reading. Maybe I wasn't ready at the time, but having many dozens of books under my belt and lots more life experience in between the first and second readings, I was able to digest more.

This has helped my trading immeasurably. It is for swing traders. It is very specific about setups, lots of examples, and lots of setups with explanations and wisdom worth studying. I have probably 50 or 60 books on trading. They all have something to them, but this is one of the top books in my libary and I am using it all the time.

This new edition of The 80x86 Family. Design, Programming, and Interfacing has been extensively updated to include material on the newest processors, including the Pentium II and III, the Xeon, the Itanium, and AMD's Athlon. More than 65 new end-of-chapter questions and problems have been added, along with numerous new figures and tables. Also included in the text are suggestions for Internet and hands-on lab projects.

Included with each book is a CD, organized by chapter, that contains the assembly listings for all of the programs in the book. The disk also contains a copy of DEBUG32, enhanced software that allows full access to the 32-bit registers and addressing capabilities of 80x86 processors. DEBUG32 also can be used for debugging protected mode programs.

An Instructor's Manual (0-13-032833-2) containing answers and solutions to all of the end-of-chapter questions and problems is available free of charge to instructors who are using this book for a course.

What Is This Book About? First and foremost, this book is about microprocessor and microcomputer technology. That is, it deals with microprocessor chips, memory chips, I/O devices, and the logic circuits needed to "glue" these parts together. To make these topics real, the Intel family of 80x86 processors is covered. As these parts are among the most popular in the industry, they represent a good starting point if you are just beginning to learn about microprocessors.

Who Should Read This Book? My intention in writing this book is to provide an entry-level college textbook that exposes the reader to the nitty-gritty details of the 80x86 processors and the microcomputer systems around which these chips are built. However, you need not be formally enrolled in a college course to find this book useful. You can pick and choose the topics that interest you, beginning with a brief history of computer technology in Chapter 1 and ending with a description of personal computer architecture and bus systems in Chapter 11. Indeed, you may find the book interesting simply for the historical chapter opener photos obtained from the Smithsonian Institution.

What Are the Key Features of This Book? In the years since this book was first written, reviewers have consistently praised its clarity and easy-to-follow writing style. In addition, each chapter is laid out in a way that enhances learning.

• Chapter Outlines. Each chapter begins with an outline that lists the major topics of that chapter.
• Learning Objectives. The major points to be learned are presented in a list at the beginning of the chapter and later repeated as these objectives are covered in the text.
• Chapter Overview. Each chapter includes an overview that "warms the reader up" for the topics about to be covered in the chapter.
• Hierarchical Design. Major topics are broken into numbered subsections that begin with an introduction and a list of learning objectives. Subtopics are then set off by themselves in bold.
• Self-Review Questions. Each section ends with a set of questions that reviews the important topics in that unit. Answers are included at the end of every chapter.
• Self-Test Questions. Each chapter includes a set of 20 to 25 multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions. These are intended to measure understanding of basic facts presented in the chapter.
• Analysis and Design Questions. These questions are keyed to the chapter subsections and require an application of the concepts developed in that chapter.

What Are the Main Topics of This Book? Logically, you can view this book as having four main parts:

Introduction. Chapters 1-3 provide an introduction to microprocessor technology and the Intel 80x86 family of processors in particular. Also included are descriptions of the binary and hexadecimal number systems, computer codes, computer operating systems, and computer programming. Pay particular attention to the historical sections of Chapter 1. This was fun to write—and in a way is my tribute to the men and women who designed and built the wondrous machines we now take for granted.

Software. Chapters 4-6 cover 80x86 programming. Initially DOS's DEBUG utility is used for program construction and testing. Later, in Chapter 6, Microsoft's assembler (MASM) is introduced along with its companion, the Codeview debugger. As in the previous edition, all of the program examples can be developed and tested on a standard PC.

Interfacing. Chapters 7-10 cover microcomputer hardware. Included are a lengthy discussion of memory technologies and interfacing examples, parallel and serial I/O ports, and programmed and interrupt driven I/O control schemes. Common serial I/O standards and modem technologies are also covered.

PC Systems. Chapter 11 concludes the book with a description of the PC XT, AT, and PCI bus structures and architectures. The SCSI and USB I/O buses are also covered in this chapter.

What's New in the Third Edition? Writing a microprocessor book can be a frustrating experience. No sooner have you updated a section or chapter and along comes a new processor that renders all of your work obsolete! Nevertheless I have attempted to "chase the chips" and keep the book as current as possible. The following list summarizes the major changes:

Chapter 1 has been extensively updated to include material on the newest processors, including the Pentium II and III, the Xeon, the Itanium, and AMD's Athlon. Table 1.1 in particular has been reworked to provide a more useful and updated summary of the various 80x86 chips.

A new section entitled Measuring Processor Performance has been added to Chapter 1. Two graphs comparing the various 80x86 and AMD processors have been included.

The section in Chapter 2 describing MS-DOS has been rewritten and now includes more historical information.

The description of 80386 Protected Mode has been greatly expanded and now includes several new figures and examples.

Chapter 3 now includes detailed descriptions of the various P6 processors (Pentium Pro, 11,.111, and Xeon).

A sidebar comparing superpipelining and superscaler processor architectures has been added.

Several examples have been added to the processor instruction descriptions in Chapter 4.

A new section (program example) featuring string instructions was added to Chapter 5. Eight fully documented program examples in DEBUG format are now included.

Chapter 7 has been extensively updated to include the latest memory technologies, including synchronous SRAM, DRAM, and RAMbus DRAM. RIMMs and DIMMs are also covered. Each memory technology is now characterized by its bandwidth capabilities.

Descriptions and examples of the 8254 timer have been added to Chapter 8.

The appendix now includes 16 tables that summarize and provide examples of each of the 8086 program instructions.

More than 60 new end-of-chapter questions and problems have been added, along with 75 new figures and tables.

Are There Any Supplements? In the back of the book you will find a CD that includes the assembly listings for all of the programs in this book. These are organized by chapter with the figure name used as the program name. In addition, you will also find on this disk a copy of DEBUG32. This is an enhanced version of the popular DEBUG utility supplied with MS-DOS. It allows full access to the 32-bit registers and addressing capabilities of the 80x86 processors. In addition, it can also be used for debugging protected mode programs. A special thanks to Rob Larson of Larson Computing and Michael Schmit of Quantasm Corporation for their permission to include this program.

An instructor's manual is also available that includes answers and solutions to all of the end-of-chapter questions and problems. Also included in this manual are suggestions for Internet and hands-on lab projects. Pay particular attention to Chapter 5, which includes solutions to more than 20 additional 80x86 programs.
