I had purchased a couple of the Furhman books but was not really satisfied with the contents. This book is far superior to Furhman's but has some its own. Some of the sections are split with a different article between the start and the ending of a given section. Obviously, the books were not proofread before publishing. The contents per se are enlightening. This book is packed with useful information. The information about treatment of animal, fowl and fish is heartbreaking. Although this book is excellent, IMHO, I have to deduct two stars. One is for the screw-up in the page sequences. The other is for a lack of menus. The purpose of the book is to encourage a plant based diet. There are a number of good recipes to do so but no menus with which to incorporate them into a daily plan. As a newbie in the transition from an unhealthy diet to one with better health support I need all the help I can get. I would like some of the experts to provide at least a week or so of a startup conversion plan which includes a daily menu.Despite my lack of a five star rating I still recommend this book regardless of the faults I perceive with which others may not agree.
Page 101: for the most nutritious meal ever known. Exxalus's Black Bean Soup. It stands alone as THE SINGLE MOST nutritious recipe you could ever make. It has everything! Put some hot sauce on it, or pepper sauce and it is perfect. For one thing I have never eaten chard before. Who has? But you will like it in this recipe. The film documentary changed our eating habits for good and you get the highlights in the beginning of this book. You almost don't need to see the documentary but you should. And we also have the large recipe only cookbook of the same name. We have both because we loved this documentary so much. Cutting out meat and dairy has made a tremendous difference in our lives. Also cutting out desserts and sodas as well. Weight loss comes pretty quickly and the long-term effects are indisputable. Why take a chance on your health? We do not deny ourselves one bit and totally enjoy our lifestyle. Of course we will have dessert on a special occasion, and maybe a soda once a month. But we keep them rare occurrences. As well as fish...this is where we digress from the book. We have fruit daily as our dessert and we are in no way lacking sweets. We have "infused" water with a splash of cranberry juice for an awesome drink that is not too sweet but has lots of fruit flavor. We drink this at home every day---it is our go to drink. Again, not lacking in any way. Cut out the sugar and cut out the red meat and cut out the dairy fat and your body can DIGEST food the right way. The other stuff just gets in the way of digesting your veggies which is where true nutrition is found. For this former voracious meat eater I didn't think I could survive on veggies, but with the right recipes I can. And the weight just stays off. Some great recipes in this book Easy Quesadillas p.82, Bean and Barley Chowder p.94, Zingy Italian White Bean soup p.96 and of course the go to Black Bean salad that stands alone, or as a side with another dish, or on top of your greens salad. p.105
I have become a Forks Over Knives convert. This book is a great companion after watching the movie (very cheap on YouTube). My wife and I have cut back on eating meat drastically, and have found loads of veggie recipes that taste great to such a point that we really don't even miss the meat. And I grew up loving meat in all its forms.At first I didn't understand the title, but once it was explained that using your fork to eat healthy foods is much better than going under the knife for surgery, it made sense. So many of my friends and co-workers eat a meat heavy diet, and yesterday we were told that one of them has to start immediate chemo after they found a very large cancerous tumor inside and outside his colon, and he is in his late 40s! In the book they talk about other parts of the world that eat mostly fruits and veggies (too poor for meat) and they have very low rates of cancer. If anyone ignores that warning, they are a fool.
I liked the documentary, so I bought this book thinking it would add to what I learned. Nope, wrong.I am returning this book because it isn't a BOOK, it's a *cookbook*. Yes, I realize it says right on the cover that it has 125 recipes, and yes, I did look at the preview. But I assumed this would be mostly BOOK plus recipes. What I got was no different than most other cookbooks I own. A cookbook with a little bit of extra information. The information was identical to the documentary, and the personal stories were scattered between the recipes.I love Forks over Knives, but I'm choosing to return this because if you want a cookbook, why not pay a few extra bucks for the Forks over Knives cookbook that has 300 recipes? Makes more sense to me. But, I suppose this would be a good book to get someone who refuses to watch the documentary? Maybe.
This is the information I was praying for when I was 300 pounds and sick with Arthritis, Cancer, Diabetics, Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure., . Each of the major speakers in the DVD production address a major illness; and they are Medical Doctors who noted; invested their time; to discern that some people got better and some people did not get well followed a hunch and discovered how to stop certain diseases and how to reverse other diseases. To me it was a surprise - Yes our nation has special interest who advertise - and the truth is not always told. And a surprise to discover that animal do not make protein. Animals get their protein from green plants. Excess animal protein will make your body sick. Bruce
